Service Description: Ensure that household medical waste is placed in the garbage * never put home health-care waste in your recycling or organics cart

Household medical waste include:
  • disposable face masks (surgical, N95)
  • disposable gloves
  • casts
  • catheters
  • colostomy bags
  • dialysis waste (e.g. tubing, filters, disposable towels and sheets)
  • disposable pads, gowns, gloves, masks and aprons
  • gastric and nasal tubs
  • IV bags and tubing
  • soiled dressing and incontinence products
  • sponges

When placing household medical waste in the garbage:
  • place it inside two plastic bags (double-bag it), and
  • place the double-bagged waste in the garbage

Sharps must be placed in biohazard containers * sharps include needles, syringes, lancets, injection pens and auto-injectors * biohazard containers are available for free at the Region’s Community Recycling Centres (CRCs) or through pharmacies participating in the Ontario Sharps Collection Program (healthsteward.ca) * customers can pick them up, and dispose of them, for free
